A few Q’s with our mates from Kiwi band, Pool House

The Pool House lads were good enough to lend us their song "Me and You" for our recent campaign video for 'Three Days in Taranaki. Like pairing a good hazy with a Gorilla burger we knew that their surf/indie rock tunes would be the perfect compliment to the visuals.

If you're like us, you'll be loving the chance to learn a bit more about the guys behind the music Will Georgeson (guitar/vocals), Harry van der Gulik (lead guitar), Samuel Crisp (bass), and Flynn Fierro (drums) + get a preview of what they've got coming this summer.

And if you haven't heard much of their work yet then you’re in for a treat.

HOW DID THE BAND COME ABOUT?

Flynn and Harry both went to the same high school in Hawke’s Bay and spent a heap of time ditching classes to sneak into the music room. Will and Sam had a similar story at high school in Wellington. We all moved to Christchurch to attend Uni in 2020, whereWill met Flynn at a party. Will instantly recruited Flynn (as there areliterally no drummers in Christchurch), after which the 4 of us played our very first gig the day of the cancelled Uni event Tea Party.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE INFLUENCES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO CREATING YOUR UNIQUE SOUND?

Our sound is inspired by a lot of New Zealand and Aussie artists. Marlins Dreaming, Mild Orange, and The Grogans to name a few. We love the energy these artists have in their songs, especially during their live sets, andit’s something we try hard to bring into our own sound.

WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE SONG 'ME AND YOU'?

Me and You is the first song we wrote together as a band. It's about a relationship that has passed and reflects on the challenge of moving forward. Everyone has had a relationship with a friend or a partner which justisn't as enjoyable as it used to be.

WE'VE SEEN MULTIPLE SINGLES AND AN EP FROM YOU GUYS THIS YEAR, WHAT ELSE IS IN THE PIPELINE?

We have a new single coming out on the 1st of December called ‘Another Day.’ We had the opportunity to work with NZ On Air who helped fund the project. This meant we got an awesome music video to go with the single.

OUR SUMMERS ARE SPENT NEAR VARIOUS BEACHES WHEREVER THE FISH ARE BITING. WHAT'S IN STORE FOR YOU GUYS THIS SUMMER?

We got the chance to play at Rolling Meadows this year which we are seriously fizzing about! It's our first summer festival and wecan’t wait to see what it has installed for us. The rest of the summer will be spent up in the north island playing some smaller fun shows in many of the cool towns and beaches.

WHAT'S YOU FAVOURITE WAY TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL?

Heading out for a surf mission during the weekend. There are some great spots around Banks Peninsula (just outside of Christchurch) which Will and Harry make the most of. Out there feels like you’re at the edge of the world with some pretty rugged landscapes and great surf.

YOUR SONGS WILL FOR SURE BE FEATURING ON OUR ROADIE PLAYLISTS - DO YOU HAVE ANY BANDS THAT SEEM STAY ON REPEAT WHEN YOU'RE TRAVELLING AS A BAND?

We went through a big stage of only listening to the Arctic Monkeys. At the moment Dope Lemons new album has been on repeat.

HAVE YOU HAD ANY RUN-INS WITH THE CRITTERS WE'VE PRINTED ON OUR SUMMER COLLECTION?

Out on Banks Peninsula you always end up surfing with the seals. Have seen a few fins out but always convince myselfthey’re dolphins not sharks so I can stay out in the water.

IS THERE A DREAM ARTIST, DEAD OR ALIVE, THAT YOU'D LOVE TO COLLABORATE ON A PROJECT WITH?

For some members of theband it would be The Beatles. RHCP or Arctic Monkeys would also bepretty cool.

WHERE'S YOUR FAVOURITE SUMMER GETAWAY SPOT?

Crispy: Whangamata is my favourite, just love the beach around there and have been there a few times with family and friends so I have lots of great memories there.

Will: Trip out to Hickory Bay in the summer. The surf is awesome and it tends to be pretty quiet and isolated. Usually paired with some good mates making for a great mission.

Harry: Waimarama Beach, great locals and great memories. Epic place when the waves are firing but even more so when the fish are biting and if not the fish and chip shop is always a great second option.

Flynn: Castle hill, the transition between the busy city and the outdoors still gets me every time. I love skiing and riding, and the mountain scenery makes it feel like another world.

WHO WOULD BE THE BEST FISHERMAN IN THE BAND?

Not Crispy

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, DO YOU HAVE A GO-TO SUMMER BEVERAGE?

Our go to summer beverage is a Hazy IPA. BRBs ‘Haze of our Lives’ is a yummy beer which isn’t too expensive.

We highly recommend checking out Pool House on Spotify, give them a follow on Instagram @poolhouse.music and keep an eye out for their next gig near you. You just might see us there.
